چکیده

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is a common cognitive disorder in cirrhotic patients, but is clinically asymptomatic. In Japan, It can be diagnosed by computer-based simple neuropsychiatric test with high specificity. Moreover, we recently established much more available and routine screening tool of MHE, using chronic liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ), from the viewpoint of less timeconsuming. Cirrhotic patients diagnosed as MHE can be medicated by several supplementations. L-carnitine is one of the treatment modalities of MHE. It would stimulate mitochondrial function, and reinforce the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, leading to the amelioration of MHE. Cases with MHE amelioration after the treatment had a significantly higher serum level of taurine before treatment, not only supporting pre-therapeutic prediction of MHE amelioration, but also being beneficial from a financial perspective.

Evaluation of the role of TLR4 in endotoxin-induced hepatic encephalopathy in rats with biliary cirrhosis

Background: Hepatic encephalopathy is defined as a neuropsychiatric brain dysfunction in acute or chronic liver failure. Infection and inflammation have crucial role in its pathophysiology. The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the relationship between toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) expression and the encephalopathy induced with endotoxin in biliary cirrhotic rats. Methods: The present stud...

Detecting Minimal Hepatic Encephalopathy in an Endemic Country for Hepatitis B: The Role of Psychometrics and Serum IL-6

BACKGROUND & AIMS It remains unknown what the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy is in Taiwan, a highly endemic country for chronic viral hepatitis infection. It is also unclear whether abnormal serum cytokine levels can be indicative of the presence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy. We aimed to standardize the tests of psychometric hepatic encephalopathy score and predictive value o...

Single photon emission computed tomography and statistical parametric mapping analysis in cirrhotic patients with and without minimal hepatic encephalopathy.

OBJECTIVE The early diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairment in cirrhotic patients is needed to improve the patients' daily living. In this study, alterations of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) were evaluated in cirrhotic patients using statistical parametric mapping (SPM). The relationships between rCBF and neuropsychological test, severity of disease and biochemical data were also ...

بررسی مقایسه ای پاراسنتز آسیت شدید در افراد سیروتیک با و بدون استفاده از آلبومین وریدی

Introduction: It has been shown that repeated large volume paracenthesis associated with intravenous albumin infusion is a rapid, effective and safe therapy of massive ascites in cirrhosis. Our aim was to investigate wether IV infusion of albumin is necessary in large volume paeacenthesis therapy of cirrhotic ascites. Methods: 37 patients with tense cirrhotic ascites who were intractable to diu...

Minimal hepatic encephalopathy.

The term minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) refers to the subtle changes in cognitive function, electrophysiological parameters, cerebral neurochemical/neurotransmitter homeostasis, cerebral blood flow, metabolism, and fluid homeostasis that can be observed in patients with cirrhosis who have no clinical evidence of hepatic encephalopathy; the prevalence is as high as 84% in patients with hep...
